All About Savasana

z1

Savasana or shavasana is the final relaxation pose at the end of a yoga class.  Lying flat on your back with eyes closed and palms facing up, savasana allows for your body to process the everything that just happened.  But is there more to savasana?

The answer is YES!  Besides allowing your body to process the yoga class, it also acts as a form of meditation.  During yoga class you are so focused on the class, that it’s easy to stay in the now.  Once you are finished it’s very easy to let your mind wander.  “What’s for dinner tonight?  Do I have time to get a pedicure?  I wonder if he called me back?”  Savasana although relaxing is still very active.  It is important just like in meditation to keep your mind focused on the present.  Remind yourself to not let your thoughts wander.  Doing so will allow you to reap all the benefits of savasana.

Additional benefits of savasana:

  • calms your mind
  • relieves stress
  • relaxes your body and nervous system
  • reduces fatigue
  • decrease in heart rate, blood pressure and muscle tension
  • increase in energy
  • increase in focus
